QC Inspection Services Ltd. Vol. 3, #1 NEWSLETTER

Did you know . . . AWS/ASME have made significant changes to the 502 & 505 specs. for 5% and 9% chrome materials, (e.g. E505 is now E8018-B8). These filler metals have been moved from the Stainless Steel specification to the Low Alloy specification. They have also been reclassified consistent with the filler metal classifications in their new specification.

Many of the existing 502 & 505 weld procedures will now require revisions to comply with the current edition of the code. QC Inspection Services would be pleased to discuss these changes with our clients and perform the necessary revisions.

WELDING - FCAW Semi-automatic welding on pipeline. More and more, this method is being used on heavy wall pipeline projects, with significant cost savings. QC Inspection Services has developed welding procedures for this process, and welcomes questions you may have with regards to its use in your upcoming projects.

ALERT - Engineers1. Professional Liability - January 1, 2000. If it can be proven that your firm was aware of the year 2000 problem when you specified equipment or facilities which use computer programs dependent on date and time, your insurance may not cover any liability. This includes process facilities that have equipment tied to computers. You should talk to your professional liability insurance company for further information.

ALERT - Crane Owners and Lessees2. Occupational Health & Safety has issued an alert on the collapse of truck mounted cranes. OH&S states that owners and lessees have legal responsibilities for equipment maintenance and certification. Maintenance must be conducted in accordance with the OEM specifications by qualified tradespeople, with welding or structural repairs done under the direction and control of a professional Engineer. Certification must be maintained by regular inspections by qualified personnel.

QC Inspection Services is certified by the Canadian Welding Bureau for structural steel inspections on all lifting equipment, and provides a Professional Engineer's certificate. The industry standard recommends inspections every 12 months, or when modified or damaged.
